Find out below what our Community Iftar celebrations have looked like over the last few years.

What is Iftar?

Iftar is the daily breaking of fast during the month of Ramadan, when Muslim communities will fast in daylight hours, then pray & eat together after sunset. Iftar is celebrating time together, reflecting and praying, and giving generously to help others.

Five years ago, a group of Oasis Mum’s from all faiths and backgrounds, initiated a community event to celebrate Iftar, offering a chance to extend the understanding, learning, connection, generosity and celebration of the month of Ramadan within the community. This was led by the Muslim community within the Oasis family, and included support from the Oasis church and school communities, as well as community partners such as Islamic Relief, We Are Waterloo, and local business and generous food vendors, Falafel Rush.

In 2019, we were able to run a big street party for hundreds in our community on Lower Marsh involving a led reflection, children’s activities, a call to prayer and the breaking of fast together, followed by free meals being distributed to all in attendance to share together.

2020 saw us move the Community Iftar online, where we gathered one evening for a creative activity making paper communities, and to hear reflections & prayers from members of the community, including faith leaders, Oasis teachers and Florence Eshalomi MP. We were led in the call to prayer by a local family. You can watch a previous year’s event here.

In 2021, we celebrated in generosity as we we funded to provide Celebration Packs, food bags with recipe cards collated by local residents, and craft bags to enable families and individuals to make decorations, cards and share them with one another.
